Abstract
downwelling is embedded in the solution. It is illustrated with measurements recorded by the Catalina Dynamic Ocean Chemistry (CDOC) program. The CDOC program measures temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll using a YSI sonde at 18-m depth attached to a mooring chain where the seabed is approximately 30-m deep. The mooring is located in the Southern California Bight at 33.4469o N, 118.4888o W, off Santa Catalina Island on the steep slope in the Wrigley Marine Reserve outside of Two Harbors, roughly 30 km northwest of Avalon. In addition, temperature recorders were attached to the chain at 6.1-m (20 ft), 12.2-m (40 ft) and 24.4-m (80 ft) depths, straddling the sonde's depth. The pH measurement bias uncertainty is 0.1 pH unit, while that of the temperature is 0.2o C. All fixed-depth sensors sampled at 30-min intervals. To date, there have been seven deployments with each typically 2 to 3 weeks in duration.
