Series 14 - Photographs

Prints, negatives, and transparencies, collected and taken by Dame Judith Binney during her career as a historian. Images particularly relate to Rua Kenana and Te Kooti Rikirangi Turuki - also to the Ngai Tuhoe people in general. The period circa 1860s to circa 2009 is covered, particularly the 1980s and 1990s. Many colour images were taken by Binney. Of particular note are the black and white photographs (negatives and proof sheets) taken by Gillian Chaplin during trips made by Chaplin and Binney to the Ureweras in the late 1970s. Also Chaplin's b&w 1980s images of eight women connected with the Ringatu faith. Also notable are the many colour photographs (negatives with corresponding prints) taken by Binney, of land and places related to Maori. Includes many original b&w prints relating to the Presbyterian mission in the Whakatane district, circa 1920s, taken by unidentified photographers. Also includes images taken at Binney's book launches, and photographs of Binney.
