Abstract

The hull forms, resistance, and seakeeping characteristics of the NSMB systematic series of high-speed displacement ships are described. The series is comprised of 27 hull forms, developed between 1979 and 1984, 17 of which have been model-tested. A special sub-set of 9 forms (of which 6 were model-tested) were developed to ensure that the parent hull possessed good seakeeping and resistance characteristics. A special hull form transformation procedure was developed to derive the hull form geometry for different block coefficient values from the parent form. A brief description of this hull form transformation procedure is included in this paper as well as a discussion of how resistance and seakeeping results can be applied in preliminary ship design problems associated with specific trade-offs between resistance and seakeeping characteristics.
