CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE IN DIALOGUE OF “LAYAR TERKEMBANG” NOVEL BY SUTAN TAKDIR ALISJAHBANA

This study dealt with Conversational Implicature in Dialogue of Layar Terkembang Novel By Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana based on Grice’s Theory. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of Conversational Implicature, to describe the Conversational Implicature used in the dialogue, and to explain the reasons for certain type of Conversational Implicature becomes dominant. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the dialogue of Layar Terkembang novelby Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana published by Balai Pustaka in 1963 as source of data. The finding showed that there were two types of conversational implicature namely Generalized Implicature that belong to 33 utterances and Particularized Implicature that belong to 36 utterances. Generalized used when the context was free and the hearer didn’t need specific context. Then Particularized used when the hearer need specific context and should have prior knowledge to interpret the implicit meaning. There were some reasons that certain type becomes dominant such as the simple words were not enough to describe their sentence, the sentence more contained ambiguity, implicit meaning, conveyed an additional meaning, and their response did not relevant with every question. So it cannot easily to understand what he/she said.
