The propeller shaft is a component that connects the ship's main engine to the ship's propeller which aims to rotate the ship's propeller so that the thrust occurs so that the ship moves forward. Shaft propellers ship are very important because in general ships moving in the medium of water with a certain speed, it will experience a drag (resistance) that is opposite to the direction of motion of the ship. The amount of drag that accurs must be able to be overcome by the thrust of the ship (thurst) resulting from the work of the ship’s propultion. other causes of damage: Breaking of propeller shaft seal, Propeller shaft lubricating oil circulation is not smooth, Unbalanced propeller shaft, so to prevent damage is needed periodic maintenance and repair so that the propeller shaft can work optimally. Based on the background of the problem on the propeller shaft, the problem can be formulated, including the occurrence of perfect maintenance and resulting in damaged propeller shaft components. The purpose of this paper is to determine the occurrence of imperfect maintenance and problems with the propeller shaft system. Therefore the authors conducted interview observations and data documentation during practice at PT. Gold and prosperous marble voyage Semarang. In this paper it can be concluded that the causes of incomplete maintenance of the propeller shaft include leakage of the propeller shaft lubrication and cause damage to the propeller shaft.
