Effects of different Solanum rootstocks on biomass and cadmium content of Solanum melongena seedlings

Abstract

Abstract The effects of Solanum melongena grafting with four different types of Solanum (Solanum diphyllum, Solanum nigrum, Solanum nigrum humile, Solanum alatum) on the biomass and cadmium content of S. melongena were studied by a pot experiment. The results showed that the effects of different treatments on root, rootstock stem, scion stem, scion leaves and whole scion biomass were all smaller than the ungrafted. The whole scion biomass of the treatment ungrafted were 2.67, 2.10, 4.50 and 3.49 times as much as the treatmensts S. melongena grafted with S. diphyllum, S. melongena grafted with S. nigrum, S. melongena grafted with S. nigrum humile, and S. melongena grafted with S. alatum. However, the effects of different treatments on the above indicators cadmium content trends were different. The cadmium content of root and rootstock stem of S. melongena grafted with S. nigrum humile were higher than control, but lower than other three treatments, but the cadmium content of scion stem, scion leaves and whole scion were lowest of all treatments. In conclusion, grafting will affect the growth and absorption of cadmium in S. melongena when it grafted with four different types of Solanum and on the whole, the trentment of S. melongena grafted with S. nigrum humile is the best.
