Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study of figure of merit (FOM) of circular coil used in the inductive power transfer (IPT) system. Four transmitter coils with different physical dimension are compared. Key parameters, including inner diameter, outer diameter, and number of turns of the coil are considered. Magnetic coupling coefficient, output power, and system efficiency obtained from each coil are determined by the experimental measurement. Total length of the litz-wire and pad area required from each coil is also evaluated. The comparison results of FOM reported in this work can be used as the design guideline for the IPT coil.
