Listening to music in the music education process integrates sound and music within the educational activities. Therefore, the assumption that a gradual process of initiating the definition of contemporary sound, with subsequent introduction of increasingly complex concepts, identification with the formal characteristics and phonicality contemporary music was much more successful. The very nature of listening to music is clearly a reference to mastering complex cognitive and emotional processes. Perception and reception of music are determined by the specific act of listening in which the listener brings everything that has ever learned and experienced, and the cognitive system adapts to the new use of musical material by relying on prior knowledge and perception of similarity between the musical material, based on associations. Formation of musical categories and subjective feeling of similarity is possible because the principles of similarity allow understanding of musical connection in contemporary music regardless of musical experience with concrete work. Proper planning and appropriate teaching strategies of teachers in the context of education have a major impact on the formation and development of students. In addition to the educational, professional and social goals to be achieved, there are those related to the building and development of personal capacities students, his emotional and aesthetic maturation and may be crucial for stimulating or blocking the learning process. Listening to music in the music education process had to start from the real sound, which would provide a concrete experience, and which will specify certain segments of listening - memory, emotions, will, intellectual capacity and experience of the individual. The aim of listening to contemporary music in music pedagogy can be sensorial and sentimental nature. Listening to music should be established simultaneously processing a large number of mental actions, so that the process itself gets complex intellectual meaning. When it comes to contemporary art music it is necessary to mention its complex form, rich psychological contents and complicated aesthetic basis. The question is whether contemporary art music, as such, can improve emotional and intellectual life of the child; whether it is for teaching practice in the formation of musical preference important to listen to valuable works of contemporary music; and whether repeated listening contributing to the greater liking and interest in this kind of music? Answers to these questions are given through research which covers primary and secondary schools in Leskovac.
