Abstract

In China, the Chinese character education is carried out intensively at the first and second grades in the elementary school. In Korea, students are educated with 900 basic Chinese characters in the middle school. In China, they are educated with 3000 characters in the elementary school. We sometimes teach Chinese characters using radicals or analyzing the structures. In China, Chinese character education is carried out through figure, listen & repeat recitation and the principles of combination and formation. Both Korea and China teach Chinese characters using the stroke order, radical and look-up Chinese dictionary, but China unlike Korea (Chinese – what Chinese people say and write) sometimes teaches Pinyin(拼音) and educates students with Chinese characters using Pinyin (拼音). Since simplified characters have been used in China, they have disadvantages in analyzing and teaching characters compared to Korea where traditional characters are being used. However, they have advantage in Chinese character education through reading the sentences compared to Korea. The recent character education in China has been changed from teaching Pinyin(拼音) at first to teaching Chinese characters at first. The reason is that students recognize Chinese characters as low level characters and get the passive learning attitude if they are taught Pinyin(拼音) at first and then Chinese characters later. In Chinese character education in Korea, there are many methods of education being studied such as a method utilizing the audio part, a method analyzing and teaching Chinese characters and a method using various media including comics, painting, photography and computers. In China, many methods have been studied such as Bunsan composition(education by dispersing the class)(分散識字), Jipjung composition (Chinese character education is intensively carried out in low grades)(集中識字), Bugeon composition (education by analyzing the radicals of Chinese characters)(部件識字), Jami composition (education using enigma)(字謎識字), Jari composition(字理識字), Jageun composition(字根識字) and computer composition. Since research on Chinese character education in China has been conducted and gone through experiments with supports from national, provincial or city governments, the spread and credibility of research are great. To the contrast, research on Chinese character education in Korea has been conducted as private projects and its spread is weak. Among methods of Chinese character education in China, methods of education using enigma and songs are worth learning in Korea.
