P009 : Analysis of results of patch test to para- phenylenediamine of TRUE Test® in patient with hair dye contact allergy

Abstract

Background: para-phenylenediamine(PPD) is a primary patch test screening agent for hair dye contact allergy. However, there has been no recent study concerning the results of patch test to PPD and hair dye in Korea. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the results of patch test to PPD of True Test® in patient with hair dye contact allergy. Methods: A total of 84 patients with suspected hair dye contact allergy underwent patch testing with True Test® and their own hair dye products. Patient`s demographic information, hair-dyeing behavior, and clinical manifestation were also examined. Results: A positive reaction was found in 53.6% of patient who used their own hair dye products, and these were diagnosed as hair dye contact allergy. Although there was strong association between hair dye contact allergy and PPD sensitization (p=0.001), a positive reaction to PPD was found only in 40% among the patients with hair dye contact allergy. The mean age of the patients was 59.2 years. The most prevalent body area was forehead (73.3%), and the most prevalent symptom was pruritus (97.8%). Out of those 45 patients diagnosed as hair dye contact allergy, only 7 patients were aware that hair dye was a cause of allergic reaction. Conclusion: According to results of our study, as already known, PPD is the prime causative agent for hair dye contact allergy. However, we suggest that additional testing with hair dye ingredients from the hair dye product should be required.
