Current Status of Organic Farming and Role of Government Institutions in India

Sustainability is more concerned today in various fields, likewise in agriculture sector “Sustainable Agriculture” or organic farming is a panacea for Indian agriculture system. The world is more focused than earlier for its consumption as well as health issues and these both covered in organic products of the market demand. It may be efficiency concerned for a farmer who wants to increase farm output level from a minimum level of input, and in these cases, organic farming is very promising. Organic farming is a societal need, it is not only from consumer‟s perspective but also from a farmer point of view. For the transformation of rural agriculture into a well sustainable agriculture, organic farming might become panacea which can build a plinth for sustainable agriculture and reimburse conversion cost and maintain the sustainability of soil. The purpose of this paper to examine the current status of organic farming and role of government institutional programs such as Public Guarantee System (PGS) in India.
