Flexible traffic signal control for bus priority

Abstract

Since BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) systems are capable of effectively releasing traffic pressures in urban areas, they have received more and more attention around the world. As a new type of public transportation system, BRT should meet the requirements of larger passenger capacity, higher service quality and better fleet scheduling. Traffic signal priority guarantees the bus running without stop at junctions but has minimal impact on the whole traffic system. In the paper, an inductive loop based isolated junction control strategy for BRT is discussed. In order to implement coordinative control for bus priority, a flexible control approach based on a network is presented. The approach has been applied successfully in the BRT system in Hefei, China.
