Abstract

This research study was carried out through the cooperation of the Civil Engineering Department of Marquette University and the Ecology Division of Rex Chainbelt, Inc. At the time of this study the author was completing his requirements for a Master of Science degree through a cooperative workstudy program coordinated between the two institutions. The location of the study was Racine, Wisconsin where the Ecology Division was conducting an Environmental Protection Agency sponsored project. The objective of the project was to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of treating combined sewer overflow and urban stormwater runoff by means of dissolved air flotation units located at outfalls to the Root River. This study was incorporated into the project for the purpose of allowing the author to do an in depth study of one particular phase of the pr6ject. Under this format all necessary equipment, laboratory instrumentation, and labor assistance was provided by the Ecology Division. In turn the data obtained from this study was made available for inclusion as part of the EPA project report. The laboratory and data analyses, along with the writing and typing of this manuscript were the responsibility of the author.
