Abstract
Arenite is a sedimentary clastic rock with sand grain size and contain less than 15% matrix. The related adjective is arenaceous. The equivalent Greek-derived term is psammite, though this is more commonly used for metamorphosed sediments. The arenaceous rocks include all those clastic sedimentary rocks whose particle sizes range from 2 to 0.06 mm, or if silt is included, to 0.004 mm. Some arenites are composed primarily of carbonate particles, in which case they are called calcarenites and grouped with the limestones. Siltstone, also known as aleurolite, is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed mostly of silt. It is a form of mudrock with a low clay mineral content, which can be distinguished from shale by its lack of fissility.
