Social, Moral and Religious Education

‘The aim of all education is to enable men and women to lead fuller, happier lives, in adjustment with their changing environment.’ That quotation from UNESCO’s ‘Fundamental Education’ seems as good a definition as can be made of the aim of education, indicating as it does the two-sided aspect of living - the individual and the social. The teacher of any group of backward children is usually well aware of his or her special responsibility. Social adequacy is dependent on behaviour, and behaviour surely is dependent on respect; self-respect, respect for companions, respect for authority and respect for the job, and the particular aim of the teacher in the secondary school, mindful of the adult future of these children, should be the building up of respect in all its aspects.
