Abstract

Objective :To study the ultrastructural characteristics and the functions of ciliary body in rabbits. Methods : Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used. Results :The free face of ciliary processes upheaved like ansa. Many coarse and short microvilli and dispersed rnicroapocrinal vesicles were observed on the free surface of the epithelium. The free face of ciliary ring also had longitudinal cristae, and on the surface of its epithelium less microvilli and secretory vesicles were observed. The epithelia of ciliary body were double cubical epithelia. The superficial layer was non-pigment -ed epithelial cell, in which organelles were abundant. The cell membrane facing posterior chamber was highly folded and microvilli and secretory visecles could be seen. The deeper layer was pigmented epithelial cell, and its plasmalemina of stro-ma face was also folded. In the loose connective tissue of ciliary stroma many fenestrated capillaries were observed. Conclusion :Ciliary body is the selective permeability site of aqueous humor secretion, forming blood-aqueous humor barrier.
