This chapter gives a brief introduction to the Law of The Sea and an overview of the chapters in the book. It gives a list of key dates and introduces the most important concepts, such as territorial sea, continental shelf, fisheries zones, exclusive economic zones (EEZ), the deep seabed, and the International Seabed Authority (ISA), with focus on the outcomes at the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III) in 1982.
