Abstract
In this paper the author discusses the design being considered for an immersed tube tunnel at Khorramshahr in Iran. Designed to accommodate separate 3-lane carriageways with a central service tunnel, the structure is made up of six 80m long units. Details are given of investigations carried out into a) tunnel structural analysis, b) floatation and buoyant states, c) hydraulic models of the tunnel units and d) geotechnical conditions. A new approach to immersed tube tunnel construction is suggested using railways on the concrete bed slab. The size of segments to be carried using this method is discussed.
