Abstract

The serial sections of ten Peking ducks′ brains stained by Nissl method were used to observe the morphology and cytoarchitecture of the nucleus nervi oculomotorii (nⅢ), nucleus Edinger Westrhal(E W), nucleus predorsolateralis(PDL), nucleus nervi trochlear(nⅣ), nucleus nervi trochlear accessorius(anⅣ), nucleus tegmenti dorsolateralis(TDL), which lie in the midbrain periaqueduct gray. The results are as follows: 1. The complexus of nucleus nervi oculomotorii of Peking duck is contained in nⅢ, E W, PDL. PDL is composed of lightly staining medium and small sized cells. 2. anⅣ is situated later to the nⅣ. It is composed of densely packing, darkly staining medium sized cells. 3. TDL exists in Peking duck′s brain. It is composed of loosely packing, darkly staining medium sized cells, and situated later to nⅢ and nⅣ. 4. nⅢ, E W, nⅣ of Peking duck′s mesencephalon are similar to ones previously observed in the other birds. 5. There is subtrochlearis organ in mesencephalon of Peking duck.
