Abstract
The whole nitrogen content, membrane permeability, root activity and respiration rate were studied in 23-year-old Fraxinus mandshurica fine roots with different colors. The results showed that: ① The nitrogen content in different color fine root was decreased as the root order increased. The nitrogen content was higher in the first brown and shriveled root than in the other roots, which is in higher order and different color. ② With color deepening, fine root membrane permeability was increased significantly. ③ The root respiration rate was not increased with the increasing of nitrogen content, but had a close relationship with the root vigor.
