Abstract

The educational and therapeutic value of such discussions is very great, both for the group as a whole and for the individual members. Some scheme of post-school supervision and guidance is therefore essential. This scheme should provide readily available aids to vocational, social and personal adjustment. The ESN School must always make adequate and special provision for procedures designed to foster social maturity and competence. The special school has therefore to pay special attention to ensuring the development of the qualities needed for successful adjustment to post-school life and in overcoming or minimizing some of the personal problems that can lead to failure. Changes in routine, the necessary making of new social relationships with more normal people who may not appreciate the problems of the subnormal boy or girl, and the removal of the support of school make adjustment difficult.
