Abstract
The diagnosis and therapy of 47 patients with flail chest were analyzed. The complications generated from flail chest were more severe and had a higher incidenec on the lateral chest than on the front and the back, including pulmonary contusion and adult respiration distress syndrome (ARDS),. The range and intensity of the reverse respiratory motion was directly proportional to the pulmonary contusion. The hypertonic mixed solution with crystal and colloid was effective to treat the pulmonary contusion and to prevent ARDS. The treatment of flail chest is synthetic and complicated including the treatment of the pulmonory contusion, elimination of the reverse respiratory motion, administration of oxygen and effective medicines. Of all the cases, 38 patients were recovered with the recovery rate of 80.85%. 9 patients died with the mortatity rate of 19.15%.
