Abstract
• pH: Assess deviation of pH from normal – ↑ pH → alkalaemia – ↓ pH → acidaemia – Normal pH → no acid-base disorder or mixed acid-base disorder with opposing disorders – Note: except for chronic respiratory alkalosis, simple acid-base disorders do not fully compensate (pH ≈7.45) • Pattern: check pattern of pCO2 and HCO3 • Compensation: assess adequacy of compensation taking into account time interval required for complete compensation • Clues: check for additional clues in other investigations • Formulation: synthesize info and make acid-base diagnosis • Confirmation: check if additional tests required
