Assessment of waste logistics models in the Kumasi metropolitan area.

\nA study on improving wastes logistics was carried out in the city of Kumasi - Ghana to identify the different waste logistics models used in collecting and disposal of solid waste. Models of waste logistics and practices pertaining to generation, storage, collection and transportation, processing and final disposal were assessed. Therefore, the study was carried out to assess the different models of waste logistics used in collection, transportation and disposal of waste in the Kumasi-Ghana and to assess household’s satisfaction and level acceptance of different models of waste collection, transportation and disposal in the municipality. The results of the study reveals that, households registered under the house to house waste collection model are provided with waste collection materials but the residents under this model did not like the system because waste collection was not frequent. The study further indicated that the private waste collection companies operating under the house to house waste collection models did not have the capacity to move the waste frequently from households. The results further reveals that, all the waste collected in all the four models ends up at the landfill for disposal. The paper recommends that waste recycling and composting activities is encouraged since this would improve upon waste logistics to enhance sustainability of waste management in the city.\n
