Abstract
Acid gas production from oil drilling is a public and regulatory concern. This paper discussed the choices available for the capture and disposal of acid gas. These choices include emission into the atmosphere, processing in sulphur recovery plants, and deep subsurface injection. The option of subsurface injection was discussed with respect to the actual process, and the factors to be considered. These factors include: the geological options for injection zones; the problem of acid gas containment; the location of the injection wells; the physical properties of acid gas and the hazards associated with it; and the issue of public safety. Examples of acid gas injection projects in Alberta were cited, and the desirability and feasibility of many other such projects was suggested.
