Althaea officinalis L., Malua siluestris L. and Plantago lanceolata L. are herbal drugs with an interesting variety of effects and biological activities that are mentioned not only in folk medicine, but also elsewhere. The family Maluaceae is represented by the genera Althaea, Malua and Lauatiera. The marshmallow and mallow plants are typical members of the family. Marshmallow root and leaf are derived from Althaea officinalis L., a perennial herb that is found wild growing in southern Europe. Marshmallow root (Althaeae radix), leaves (Althaeae folium) as well as flowers (Althaeae flos) contain large quantities of polysaccharides and are used as demulcents. Common hollyhock, Althaea rosea Cav. var. nigra (Malvae arboreae flores) is also of medicinal importance. Flowers of Althaea rosea contain mucilage and are used as herbal teas. Leaves and flowers of Malua siluestris L. (Malvae folium and Malvae flos) also contain mucilage and are used against dry cough. The order Plantaginales consists of a single family Plantaginaceae which includes the genus Plantago. Leaves of ribwort, Plantago lanceolata L. and plantain seeds (Plantago seed) are of medicinal importance. Plantago seed or psyllium seed is the dried, ripe seed of Plantago psyllium L. or of Plantago indica L. (Plantago arenaria Waldst. et Kit.). Plantago psyllium is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean countries. The seeds of Plantago ouata are know as blond psyllium, ispaghula or Indian plantago seeds. Plantago ouata is an annual herb native to India and Iran, but also to the Mediterranean countries. All the seeds contain mucilage in the. epidermis of their testa. Plantago seeds are used as demulcents and in the treatment of chronic constipation. Ispaghula husk (Ispaghula testa) is used for similar purposes.
