THE MEIJI RESTORATION ERA PORTRAYED INTHE LASTSAMURAI MOVIE: A HISTORICAL APPROACH

This research focuses on the portrayals of Meiji Restoration era in The Last Samurai. This movie was choosen by the writer because the movie described the background process of Japan’s developments in the Meiji Restoration era as the starter of modernization era which change several sectors in Japan at that moment as the background setting of the movie. \nAt first writer analyze The Last Samurai movie to collect the situation that happened in the Meiji Restoration era as illustrated in the movie. Furthermore, writer compare the illustration in the movie with the real situation in Meiji Restoration era by several books as his source. Because Meiji Restoration era is a history that really happened in Japan, the writer used historical approach method to help writer to analyze writer’s research. \nThe writer can conclude that Meiji Restoration era gives a significant effect in the way of Japan’s modernization at that moment and it is wrapped in several scenes and background of The Last Samurai movie which takes Meiji restoration as the main idea of the movie., the illustration of Meiji Restoration era which are contained in the movie are representatives enough with the portrayal of developments which happened in military, political, economy, and education sectors.
