Abstract

Donald Trump, first as a candidate and now as a president, has unleashed a relentless and ruthless campaign against immigrants and immigration.From rhetoric that calls migrants "rapists" and "criminals," 1 to executive orders that stop Muslims from entering our country, 2 and to policies that speed up deportation, increase detention, downgrade due process, promise a big and beautiful wall, and seek to curb legal immigration, 3 the attack on immigration in the past year has been loud and clear.What is strange is that this attack runs counter to our economic prosperity and national security interests.Economists overwhelmingly agree that we need immigrants-both skilled and unskilled-to make our economy function.4 Skilled laborers, and the programs such as the H-1B visa, fill our rural hospitals with foreign-born doctors.5 In the
