Abstract
In this paper the differences between femininity and masculinity which appear in popular TV series Modern Family were analyzed. Over the last few years the representation of femininity and masculinity has been modified and improved, however some stereotypes about what women and men should do still lingers. It can be said that in Modern Family differences between femininity and masculinity are not strictly determined. The goal of this paper was to analyze how Modern Family uses typical femininity and masculinity stereotypes to show to its viewers that they are not obliged to follow already established guidelines concerning gender differences. Modern Family provided to its viewers the notion of change, making them realize that it is possible to ignore or neglect popular opinions imposed by the society and to create your own rules. Furthermore, the TV series enabled its characters to change, meaning that female characters were given the opportunity to show their more masculine side and male characters were given the opportunity to show their more feminine side without being judged. Additionally, from the character analysis, it can be seen that division between men and women should not be taken as strictly or as seriously as it was in the past.
