Abstract

We have argued that the barriers to a radical re-ordering of residential care centre around failures in the past to acknowledge the massive gulf which exists between life in the community and life in the institution. There has been an illegitimate transfer of domestic nomenclature to the institutional setting without a full appreciation of what is required to construct an authentic home environment.
