Abstract

Based on the theoretical background developed in the first five chapters of the book, concerning the behavior and analysis of reinforced concrete structures, the present chapter treats the main aspects of the analysis, design and detailing of frame structures of the earthquake prone concrete buildings. Analytical and laboratory investigations about the seismic behavior of concrete frames are synthetically presented and their impact on the optimum design and detailing is highlighted. Considering that a “well tailored’’ structure easily fulfills the structural requirements specific to seismic resistant structures, principles and rules for conceptual design of frames are defined. Modern analysis practice of reinforced concrete frame systems subjected to high intensity seismic actions, including advanced and simplified analysis under seismic equivalent forces, pushover and time-history post-elastic approach are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of these procedures are commented and their recommendable usage domain is indicated. The up-to-date design approach known as capacity designmethod is thoroughly presented and its application to the case of frames is discussed. Design and detailing recommendations for framed structural system in connection with specific seismic requirements and with the mutual interaction superstructure-infrastructure are commented. A case study about the seismic design and detailing of a concrete building framed section completes the chapter.
