Abstract
Current study was conducted to determine some of the biological activities of Arabic gum (AG) aqueous extract. When studied the antibacterial activity of this extract, it was clear that the AG aqueous extract was active against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria compared to Amikacin as a positive control and distilled water as a negative control. E. coli and S. aureus are the most prevalent pathogenic bacteria isolated from patients with urinary tract infection. The inhibition zone rate of E. coli and S. aureus isolates increased as the concentration of AG extract increased to reach to 12.9 mm and to 12.6 mm respectively at high concentration of the extract 50 mg/ml. Also it was found that the Arabic gum aqueous extract reduced the serum level of IL-6 in mice group that consumed the AG extract with drinking water during bacterial infection (15.91 pg/ml) compared to control group (15.38pg/ml) and group of mice with bacterial infection only (36.12 pg/ml). It can be concluded from these results that Arabic gum aqueous extract may works as anti- inflammatory in living body and acts as antibacterial agent use against pathogens.
