AN ANALYSIS ON TYPES OF SENTENCES FOUND IN READING TEXTS OF ENGLISH ELECTRONIC TEXTBOOK (BSE) “DEVELOPING COMPETENCIES” FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

In reality, the researcher found that many students graduated from senior high school, and college students in first semester still do not understand about the grammar of the target language. This fact is shown when the researcher gave questionnaires to them about types of sentences based on clauses. One of the reasons why students lack of grammar understanding is due to the lack of reading English texts as their information sources. That is why; researcher would like to analyze the types of sentences and most dominant types of sentences found in English e-book “Developing Competencies” published by Setia Purna Invest. The scope and limitation of this study are types of sentences based on clauses in reading texts for third grade senior high school. This present study used narrative qualitative design. It only describes types of sentences and the most dominant types of sentences used in that e-book in details. The object of this study is type of sentences in e-book. The instrument of this study is content or document analysis in textbook passages. Based on findings, the researcher concludes that English e-book “Developing Competencies” for third senior high school contains four types of sentences based on clauses (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence) and the most dominant types of sentences is simple sentence (45.9%), the second occurrence is complex sentence (43.2%), third occurrence is compound sentence (7.5%) and last occurrence is compound-complex sentence (3.4%). It can be concluded that simple sentence is easy to understand because of its simplified rather than compound-complex sentence. Besides, this e-book is suitable for reference or learning source because it contained four types of sentences and some characteristics featured to sharp students’ ability.
