Abstract
Carbon footprint is defines as the greenhouse gases emitted in the production of goods and services used for final consumption and during the consumption activities themselves (Hertwich and Peters, 2009). With growing attention to the impact of greenhouse gases emissions on climate change and global warming, and in an effort to better understand the construction industry’s emissions. Since industrial revolution, the atmospheric levels of these gases have increased steadily and the construction industry is well known as one of the major greenhouse gases contributors to the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide. Western countries likes United Kingdom has already taken mitigation actions to reduce the carbon footprint in construction industry. However, there is little previous study being conducted regarding the carbon footprint reduction in the world. Therefore, a research on carbon footprint reduction in Malaysian construction industry is carried out in order to help in understanding the problem of global warming. Since this research looks into the carbon footprint reduction in construction industry, thus it is crucial to identify the causes of these gases emissions in construction industry and the mitigation actions taken by the contractors to reduce these gases emissions. Moreover, this research also seeks to investigate the level of awareness of contractors regarding the carbon footprint. In the chapter of literature review has illustrated the background of carbon footprint and some others’ researcher finding to underline this research objectives. In addition, this research has conducted through literature reviews and questionnaires survey in order to achieve the objectives and the descriptive statistic method has been used to analyse the collected data and elaboration to the result of analysis. Lastly, the research is end up with a conclusion and recommendations. Moreover, the recommendations were given in order to effectively reduce the carbon footprint in Malaysian construction industry.
