The Artists' Book as Collaborative Art Practice

‘The Artists' Book as Collaborative Practice’ was a keynote illustrated lecture presented at the 'THEOREM 2017 – Doctoral research in the visual arts and design: Theory as practice and practice as theory' conference, organised by Cambridge School of Art (6-20 July 2017). The published paper complements essays of nine art and design PhD researchers in which they are allowed the space to formulate their hypotheses, discuss methodologies and present their practice-led outcomes (both physical and written) in a supportive, academic and curatorial context. ‘The Artists' Book as Collaborative Practice’ provides a detailed history and overview of my major research areas and questions as a visual artist and academic, set within the modes of production of art practice, art curation and art editorship, and in which the artist’s book is primary medium. The aim of the paper is to illustrate how both practice and theory can be consolidated within an academic environment and how the academy can fully support the nurturing and development of a rigorous art practice through a set of critical research questions and the production of new knowledge and original outcomes.
