Abstract
The fatigue problem was most evident when the core team faced the last major undertaking, preparation of the unit Student Techniques in Distance Education . There was no real agreement on what the people should attempt to cover and a total lack of ideas for some conceptual framework. The components prepared covered: an introduction to administrative theory, the impact of governmental enquiries on distance education, financial management and planning, staff development, the administration of policy development and change, and staff and job management. In summary, the rationale for the development of the Graduate Diploma in Distance Education was transformed through the course development process, although at such a point that only one-third of the present program reflects the altered orientation of the course team. The belated recognition that the cost of the position the members had taken was to restrict both their own and their students&s; discovery of the field came at a critical point in the course development process.
