Abstract
The moment of inertia is an indication of the stiffness of a beam, which is the resistance to deflection of the beam when carrying loads that tend to cause it to bend. The moment of inertia of an area with respect to an axis is defined as the sum of the products obtained by multiplying each infinitesimally small element of the area by the square of its distance from the axis. The radius of gyration of a cross-section is defined as the distance from its moment of inertia axis at which the entire area could be considered as being concentrated without changing its moment of inertia. Determine the moment of inertia of the newly built section about the centroidal horizontal axis. The moment of inertia of area is a geometrical property of an area that reflects how its points are distributed with regard to an arbitrary axis.
