An investigation aiming to demonstrate plant species / area of t he primary tropical rain forest of sout h Yunnan has been done.Species diversity , species/ individual relationship and frequency of tree species were discussed. From t he analysis of species/ area , t he optimal plot size for p hytocoenological survey on t he forest is suggested to be 0. 25 hm 2 , which is close to t he p hytocoenological minimum area of t he forest , and t he total sampling area for a forest type in which t he intrinsic floristic composition can be embodied is also sug2 gested to be at least one hm 2 (four such plots of 0. 25 hm 2 wit h cumulative area one hm 2 ) .It is also concluded t hat t he rain forest formations on non2limestone have higher species diversity t han limestone rain forest forma2 tions , and t he formations on ravine habitats have higher species diversity t han t he ones on lower hill slopes. The comparison between t he rain forest of Yunnan and t he ones of t he world revealed t hat t he rain forest of Yunnan has a slightly lower species richness t han typical lowland rain forests of sout heast Asia , but higher t han rain forests of tropical Africa.
