Abstract

Technical reviews of the papers from the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel Symposium on Vortex Flow Aerodynamics held 1st-4th October 1990 in Scheveningen, The Netherlands, are presented in this Technical Evaluation Report. In addition, some general comments, conclusions and recommendations are given regarding the relevance and success of the technical programme in meeting the needs of the aerospace community. The principal emphasis of the Symposium was to provide results from recent technical programmes with the goal of improving the understanding and prediction of separation-induced vortex flows and their effects on vehicle performance, stability, control and structural design loads. To this end, 33 papers were selected covering four specific topics: vortex fundamentals, prediction and measurement of vortex flows including their modelling, application of vortex flows to the design and performance of aeroplanes, and unsteady aerodynamic effects associated with vortex flow movements in maneuvering and oscillatory motions, instabilities and bursting. The 33 papers announced for the meeting are available in AGARD Conference Proceedings CP-494 and are listed in the Appendix of this report. This Advisory Report was produced at the request of the Fluid Dynamics Panel of AGARD.
