Conservation, heritage management and tourism development

The preservation of antiquities for coming generations must be a top priority for archaeological projects. The site was proclaimed a holy maqam (site of Islam) by the late King Hussein in 1995 and placed on the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List in 2001. The Museum’s aim is to display the archaeological heritage and store material culture specifically of this region, thus presenting the narrative of human civilization in the area. The Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth has a global appeal because of its unique geographic position. Furthermore, it is located midway between Amman and Petra or Aqaba on a highway known as the Dream Road along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. In the new Jordan Museum in Amman, there is a partial reconstruction of the Ghor as-Safi Masna’ as-Sukkar sugar factory. This shows how much Jordan values the site in terms of national heritage and as a tourist destination.
