Heroine in adventure stories in Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman’s Brave (2012) and Ron Clements & John Musker’s Moana (2016)

The focus of adventure story is the character of hero or heroine who can resolve some obstacles and danger during the journey to achieve his or her goals for saving the world. This undergraduate thesis discussed the heroine in Brave movie (2012) and Moana movie (2016). From the title of this undergraduate thesis, it would be known that the object for this research was Brave movie (2012) and Moana movie (2016). The writer formulated two research questions in this research. The first was about the portrayal of heroine through heroine’s journey in Brave and Moana movie. The second was about the construction of adventure formula in Brave and Moana movie. To analyze both of them, the researcher uses the theory of hero’s journey by Christopher Vogler. Hero’s or heroine’s journey is a stage about growth and passage each stage of journey must be passed successfully then could be called as a hero or heroine. In the other hand, the researcher also uses the theory of adventure formula by John G. Cawelti. The Adventure formula is related to the narrative structure that can construct the story. Not only analyze the hero’s journey and the construction of adventure formula, but also compare it by using comparative literature theory. This research is designed as a literary criticism. The method used in this research is comparative literature method. The results of the research indicate that the heroine in Brave and Moana movie, both of the heroine have gone through several stages in Heroine's Journey and also the heroine has an important role in constructing the adventure formula. There is one difference in the two movies when viewed from the heroine's journey. From twelve hero’s journey by Vogler, the heroine in Brave movie goes through 9 stages of hero’s journey. Meanwhile the heroine in Moana movie passed 10 stages of the hero’s journey. According to the adventure formula, the heroines in the Brave and Moana movie have constructed the adventure formula. When viewed from the elements that make up the adventure formula, both films are equally qualified in constructing the adventure story.
