Utilization of Closed-in-Place Underground Storage Tanks in the Remediation of Contaminated Soils and Groundwater

Abstract

Contaminated groundwater may be treated on site to eliminate costly disposal. Closed-in-place underground storage tanks may be utilized in the construction of soil and groundwater remediation systems. A report presented a detailed activity summary, a description of subsurface lithologies, soil and groundwater analyses, characterization of groundwater behavior, and a determination of the horizontal and vertical extent of soil and groundwater contamination. Groundwater recharge areas at the site are covered with asphalt or under roof. A groundwater sample from the site was aerated to determine if any oxidized precipitates would be formed. Temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen concentrations were measured at the site in groundwater samples from monitoring points. Effluent concentrations reflect concentrations in recovered groundwater and the addition of nutrients prior to injection to the subsurface. Data from groundwater and soil analyses indicate the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons from the site. Innovative technology was utilized as part of an in situ remediation, soil and groundwater treatment system.
