Building sustainable peace in post-conflict settings in Africa

This chapter examines the nature of current peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts in post-conflict Liberia. It examines recent literature that deals with development and human security issues in Liberia and articulates the post-conflict interventions aimed at achieving sustainable peace. The chapter provides a background on Liberia’s conflict situation, the conflict reconstruction process, national efforts toward peacebuilding, the current national status and the challenges faced, and also provides recommendations to address these challenges. In 2010, Liberia asked to be placed on the United Nations peacebuilding agenda to bolster the nation’s peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery efforts. When the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security on 31 October 2000, it reaffirmed the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction and asserts the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security.
