Abstract
Side-channel power analysis and glitching for embedded hardware security Today the embedded computer systems security and cryptodevices security is becoming a very difficult problem and challenge to solve. Although modern cryptographic algorythms are computationaly unbreakable (within reasonable amount of time and with accesible computational power), brute force is not the only way to breach security systems. Side-channel attacks have become rather simple, commercially available, inexpensive and with little bit of know-how completely feasible methods of breaking the most modern cryptographic algorythms. There are several types and categorizations of side-channel attacks, among whom non-invasive passive attacks stand out the most. Because of their non-invasiveness, there are no thamper evidence left on the cryptodevices and they do not require any expensive equipment; and because of their pasiveness, there is little or no way device can detect a security breach. Those two things make them the worst of all side-channel attacks. Power analysis attack belongs in that group. The ChipWhisperer® platform helps us to simulate attacks on other cryptodevices with simplicity as shown in this thesis on several examples.
