AN ERROR ANALYSIS OF THE STUDENTS’ NARRATIVE TEXT IN USING SIMPLE PAST TENSE

English is a foreign language, that is why students usually find some difficulties in learning English. The difficulties can result an error so, the objectives of the research entitled “An Error Analysis of the Students’ Narrative Text in Using Simple Past Tense” is to identify how many errors the students made in using simple past tense, and to classify the type of errors that the most and the least frequently made in the students’ narrative text in using simple past tense. This research uses qualitative research method. The subject of this research is 14 of the first grade students at MA Nurul Iman in academic year 2015/2016. The instrument of the research is writing test in using simple past tense. The collected data are analyzed and interpreted based on the type of errors Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay’s theory (1982). The results of data analysis showed that the totals of errors made by the students were 82. Based on the data analysis the most frequently that the students made were misformation type and the least frequently error that the students made were addition type.
