Abstract

Ethnography has been used in applied linguistics to investigate a range of phenomena, from classroom learning to workplace interaction. This chapter aims to document how ethnography has evolved as a key research method in socially sensitive, participatory research in general and in applied linguistics in particular, and the type of issues and research questions ethnography is best to help to address. Examples will be drawn from school/classroom based research and community/wide society–based studies. Connections with other methods will also be discussed.
