Campylobacter SPP. in intenstinal mucose and liver of lamb

Abstract

The presence of Campylobacter jejunilcoli was examined in the intestinal mu-cose and liver of lambs. The material comprised 65 samples of intestinal mucose and 65 liver samples from clinically healthy lambs. The lambs were obtained from a farm and slaughtered in an abattoir. A liquid base enrichment Brucella bouillon, and a modified enrichment Brucella bouillon with added antibiotics, and a foundation according to Skirrow were used in the examinations. Campylobacter jejuni/coli was isolated in 76.92% samples from intestinal mucosa with the use of the modified enrichment Brucella bouillon with added antibiotics. Following biotypization, it was found that the infection was mixed and that Campylobacter jejuni was represented in 46% and Campylobacter coli in 54% samples. Using the enrichment Brucella bouillon, Campylobacter jejuni/coli was isolated in 63.07% samples, with Campylobacter jejuni accounting for 43.91% samples, and Campylobacter coli for 56.09% samples. The findings were slightly lower in the liver. In this case as well, it was shown that modified enrichment with added antibiotics was more efficient, as the use of this base resulted in the isolation of Campylobacterjejuni/coli from 69.23% samptes. Through biotypization, it was determined that Campylobacter jejuni was present in 4O% samples and Campylobacter coli in 60% samples. Using enrichment, Campylobacter jejuni/coli was isolated from 58.46% samples, with Campylobacter jejuni being present in 42.11% samples and Campylobacter coli in 57.89%. It is clear from these results that this pathogen is represented in the digestive tract of lambs in a high percentage, and that martiputetion with lamb carcasses can easily cause contamination of the meat.
