Abstract
A baby’s first experience of road safety is often the journey home from the hospital, safely ensconced in their first-size car seat. He can start learning the basics of road safety even while still in his buggy, but he needs his parents and carers to set a good example. As a child with a sight impairment, he is going to be more dependent on listening skills to cross the road safely. As a progression, get him to indicate where the sound is coming from or which way it is going. There are many ways to get from one side of the road to the other. Subways and underpasses have fallen out of favour, but can still be found in large cities. Footbridges provide another way of reaching the other side without touching the road. Young children should concentrate early road safety on controlled crossings that make the vehicle stop to allow pedestrians to cross.
