Abstract

This report is one of a series of net energy analyses of several selected energy supply systems, including ocean thermal, wind, and municipal waste energy conversion; fluidized-bed coal combustion; and in situ oil shale processing.These analyses were conducted by the Institute for Energy Analysis (IEA) of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) under contract to the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration.Based on the findings of these separate analyses, a single project report will be prepared by IEA, and should be available in April of 1977.Several issues arose while we were performing certain net energy analyses, such as the need for detailed price indexes and for an esti mate of the total energy required to ship freight by rail.Short memoranda on these and other topics that appear to have potential applications in the analysis of additional technologies are included in our net energy analysis project papers.A list of all papers in this series is provided in the Appendix of this report.
