Abstract

The development of the ovaries and oocytes shows an annual cycle. Oogenesis is divided into four phases: (a) multiplication phase of oogonia, (b) initial growth phase of oocytes I, (c) proper growth phase of oocytes I (vitellogenesis), and (d) post-growth phase of oocytes I. All oocytes of an animal are seldom in the same phase of oogenesis. Therefore the reproductive cycle of the ovaries has been studied by histological and biometrical methods and is divided into four stages: (1) the resting stage, in which phases a and b of oogenesis are observed; (2) the early growth stage, in which phases a, b, and c of oogenesis are present, (3) the stage of late growth and partial maturation, in which phases a and b are present and vitellogenesis is occuring; (4) the maturation stage, in which phases c and d of oogenesis are present.
